OaxacaCine, a local association that was formed to exhibit and preserve the influence of film in Oaxaca, has announced the arrival of the International Film Festival of the National Film Archives to the city. Now in it's 53rd showing, the festival returns to Oaxaca after an absence of more than 10 years. As part of the event, the public is invited to enjoy recent works by some of the world's best filmmakers, which will be exhibited at the Teatro Macedonio Alcalá until February 23.
The 53rd International Film Festival of the National Film Archives begins on February 8, and kicks off with a showing of In a Better World, the Danish film that won honors for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards in the United States.
The schedule ends with showings of eight films in the final nine days of the festival. On February 15, the theater will show The Useful Life, a black-and-white Uruguayan drama directed by Federico Veiroj. This feature is followed by: the Russian film Elena; the Turkish film Once Upon a Time in Anatolia; Detachment, by Tony Kaye, the director of American History X; Mysteries of Lisbon, the posthumous film by prolific Chilean director Raul Ruiz; the Argentinean film The Man Next Door; The Legend of Uncle Boonmee, from Thailand; and When You're Strange, an American documentary about rock music's The Doors, narrated by actor Johnny Depp.
Each film has earned distinction for its unique portrayal of the topics it portrays and firm grasp of its subject matter. The Man Next Door focuses on the capacity of the human psyche for obsession and paranoia, with a story about an incident between two neighbors over a common wall. Detachment, staring Adrien Brody, is an independent film that chronicles three weeks in the life of a troubled substitute teacher who bonds with a runaway teenager. And Once Upon a Time in Anatolia follows a party of men, including two homicide suspects, who search for the buried body of the murderers' victim.
With these selections, Teatro Macedonio Alcalá, OaxacaCine, and the International Film Festival offer the public a chance to enjoy and reflect upon the world's best cinema. For more information about the the film festival, visit: http://www.cinetecanacional.net or http:// www.oaxacacine.com.
