Hidden among the charming colonial buildings along Macedonio Alcalá sits a local business that has particularly embodied the pleasures of a trip through Oaxaca. At Cosmetologa Naturista y Spa, guests are invited to try out a series of health and relaxation treatments that are designed to indulge the senses and coddle the weary traveler. The spa offers a wide range of services, typical for a cosmetology clinic, but distinguishes itself by its unique use of natural products, such as rice, flowers, lemons and chocolate.

For example, the clinic may use common products like rice for skin whitening treatments, milk to extract acids from the skin, and plants and flowers for hormonal treatments. Fruit, chocolate and coffee grounds, all rich with antioxidants, can be used to minimize pores and exfoliate dead skin cells. "All of these common items can be used for skin care if you know how to apply them properly," says Rodriguez.

In addition to these methods, Cosmetologa Naturista y Spa offers a carte of therapeutic services that cater to vacationers with some leisure time to spare. Massages are available, as well as light phototherapy, and aromatherapy techniques that use plant oils to calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety and enhance energy.
