Toledo Introduces
Picasso
Genius. That’s perhaps the best
word to describe Pablo Picasso, and even such a term does
little justice to the importance
of the man and his work. His is one of those names that
everybody has, at least, heard of. His work is perhaps
the most representative example of the twentieth century avant-garde
art movement. Founder
of Cubism, Picasso
changed the way in which art was conceived.
Severely criticised during his time, Picasso’s work is nowadays
amongst the most coveted and sought after; misunderstood
by most during his life and
even after his death, it is not until now that we all begin to understand the
magnitude and importance of Picasso.
Scattered in museums and private collections around the world, opportunities
to see a large number of his works are rare. The Graphic Arts Institute of
Oaxaca, in conjunction with Maestro Francisco Toledo, have put together
35 pieces of
Picasso’s graphic artwork. The Institute has made it possible for all Oaxaqueños
and visitors to Oaxaca to admire some of Picasso’s most renowned examples
thanks to the generosity of painters Sergio Hernandez and Jose Luis Cuevas,
who have provided pieces from their private collections, as well as from the
Jose
Luis Cuevas Museum.
The exhibition includes works from the series ‘La Celestina,’ ‘Sueño
y Mentira de Franco,’ ‘Sable Mouvant,’ ‘Le Cocu Magnifique,’ and ‘Portrait
of Rembrandt,’ among others, and will be open from March 3rd until
May 28th and, as usual, entrance is free. The collectors will be present
at the
opening that will take place on the night of the 3rd.
