Guidelines for contributors
The right way to join the staff of the Oaxaca Times

Writers needed

We are constantly on the lookout for contributors. If you enjoy writing and feel there is a story that needs coverage, or you are a photographer and live locally and would like a regular platform to publish you work, we would love to hear from you.

The Oaxaca Times is primarily a cultural guide to the city of Oaxaca, but covers important news and cultural issues that affect Mexico—and therefore Oaxaca implicitly. It is preferred that stories are written from a Oaxacan-perspective, first and foremost, and develop from there where appropriate.

Articles

The Oaxaca Times publishes three long features each month, plus an essay/discussion piece and a long travel article. Shorter informatitive pieces and reviews also appear. Preferred article length is between 500-800 words. Please do not exceed 800 words unless given authotisation by the editor.

Tone of writing is an important factor in editorial decisions—articles must be balanced and factual. The Oaxaca Times will not accept articles that are overtly derogatory of any person/group, or content that inappropriately or forcefully attempts to push an agenda will also not be accepted. Information sharing should remain the foremost objective. Opinion pieces are welcome but must be clearly flagged as this—not disguised as factual news items. The Oaxaca Times is not currently interested in personal narrative pieces or short stories.

Articles will be edited for length, defamatory material, accuracy of fact and succinctness. The Oaxaca Times has a tight turn-around process—if you wish to view your article post-editing, please make sure it is submitted 10 days before deadline (the 24th of each month) at the latest, and that this request is clearly stated. You will need to maintain email correspondence to view your work after editing and before publication. Please note that a non-response will be considered as consent to go ahead with the edited version.

Articles to be submitted as Word documents in twelve-point Times New Roman font, single-spaced with no paragraph breaks. Please do not double space after full stops. Supply preferred introduction and pull-out quotes if desired. If time permits, please submit an article proposal before submission.

Editorial commission is not a guarantee of publication—the editor retains the right to request a rewrite, or to reject a piece at any stage. Editor's decision is final.

Unfortunately, The Oaxaca Times does not have the financial means to pay its contributors.

Images

It is preferred that you submit relevant images with articles. Amateur photographers are encouraged, though if you need a photographer to help you cover a story, let us know and we will try and organise one for you. If you are based in Oaxaca and need to use a scanner, please contact us by phone or email and use of the office scanner can be arranged. Please supply references and preferred captions.

All images should be supplied at an effective resolution of 200dpi or greater wherever possible. TIFF, EPS and JPEG (high) formats are preferred. Too-low resolution is always a problem—it is very rare that 'too-high' resolution problems occur. Effective resolution means that, for example, a 300 dpi image scaled to 200% size has an effective resolution of 150dpi. Contact us if you have any questions.

Deadlines

Deadline for submission is the 20th of every month. The liklihood is that emailing an article or proposal at this late date would not allow publication until the following edition of the paper. You will receive a notice of confirmation/rejection within 10 days of writing.
