The Camino Real is located at the site of the former convent of St. Catherine of Siena, which Fray Bernardo de Alburquerque (of the order of the Dominicans) was granted permission to establish from the Roman Holy See in the late sixteenth century. This building was then used as a jail and offices for the city government.
Finally in 1972, a team of experts was given the task of restoring the building's murals, a legacy of its original dwellers, which adorned the walls that once were cells and corridors. The restoration was finished in 1975, and today, the structure is home to Hotel Camino Real Oaxaca. The Guelaguetza is a holiday celebrated on the third and fourth Friday of the month of July. The state is divided into eight regions (Cañada, Valles Centrales, Sierra Norte, Sierra Sur, Istmo, Costa, Papaloapan y la Mixteca). Every Friday, the hotel's Salón La Capilla, or Chapel Hall, is dressed with the colors, flavors and rhythms of the Guelaguetza, accompanied with live music and dance of the eight regions of the state, and by a delicious buffet of regional cuisine. On Saturdays in the Bugambillia Garden is presented in a traditional Mariachi style. Guests are invited in with no cover charge, and the service is a la carte. From Thursday to Saturday enjoy our bohemian music and a pleasant place to be with friends or have get-togethers in our Bar Las Novicias, which is open daily from 17:00 to 24:00. Every day enjoy the best Oaxacan buffet in our old kitchen open from 7:00 to 12:00 hours.
